French French French

I wrote my first completely-in-French e-mail yesterday. My professor wrote back in French and I actually understood everything he said. He said I express myself very well and it's hard to find mistakes with my grammar. *is terribly chuffed*

Of course, now if I could just speak it as well as I can read/write it.

I have such a perverse fondness for things that desecrate my childhood.

Frollo: ......excuse me?

Hee!

I've been watching Disney movies in French. That is a thorough mindfuck. I think it's the voices being different, it doesn't quite jibe with my 21 year experience with these characters. Especially the villains. No one can be as chilling a Frollo as Tony Jay. And it's no good knowing the dialogue verbatim because it's changed so drastically in another language (song lyrics are often not even remotely the same). And since the subtitles are for the English language track, they're no use either. That's good though, I guess, since my sound recognition needs work.

And I know it's an unfair comparison, since foreign lyrics have to be molded to fit the melody of the song, but:
Have pity, Maria / Protect me from this bad fate / from this evil flower and her body / Destroy Esmeralda!/ Let a curtain of fire be her only shroud! / Or else make her mine and mine alone!

Just isn't as effective as

Protect me, Maria / Don't let this siren cast her spell / Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone / Destroy Esmeralda! / And let her taste the fires of hell! / Or else let her be mine and mine alone.

For the future: just watch French films instead.

Reading The Sorceror's Stone in French is easier (again, I know the source material inside and out and so can use context clues to figure out the meaning of new words). However, that is very slow going. Having to read so slowly is disorienting and gives me quite a headache.

Best part of the midnight showing last night? The moment when the New Moon trailer came on and the theater erupted into boos. Lol, the boys a few rows behind us screaming "TWILIGHT SUCKS!" and "DON'T BRING THAT SHIT IN HERE!" and the group of girls that got all offended. I was beside myself with glee.

Okay, so since Lisa unfortunately had to bail (she has an exam July 15th), Katelyn will be taking care of the tickets.

The pre-party will probably be at my house.

Anyway, Katelyn wanted me to double-check with everyone and confirm who is and isn't coming. She's getting the tickets on Thursday, so we'll need a confirmation before then.

UPDATED
Definitely coming:

Rachel

Not coming:

LOL BRITTANY DO NOT MAKE US HUNT YOU DOWN!

I'll also be sending this out on Facebook.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Happy 2 year anniversary of prom! (seriously, two years ago...what?)

Speaking of prom, I seriously had the weirdest dream last night. It was prom, though apparently the school we went to was so large that needed to split it into five separate proms (there was one on a beach, one on a cruise ship, etc.). So me, Katelyn and this other girl I've never seen before get into a limo driven by Laurence Dominic from Dollhouse and he just sort of takes off and we're all "Um, I think there's supposed to be more people in here... also, I don't think we're supposed to be this far into Howell..." and we get the general gist that he's kidnapped us and is going to do horrible things to us and so I manage to get out of the car and into this other guy's, where I call the cops on his cellphone.

And then the dream did that weird thing that dreams do... where it just shifts setting with no warning and suddenly I'm at the prom taking place at this really fantastic water park and I keep getting pushed in the pool and asked to party. And I'm like "No, guys, I have some pretty serious shit to deal with right now." But nobody cares. And Harry Potter is just sort of chilling in the pool and all these people are wearing costumes in the pool, but not him. It actually just is Harry Potter, which... what? Anyway, so, like there's a guy dressed like Spiderman in the pool and an entire group of people dressed like Henry II and his family (what?). And the guy dressed like Richard the Lionheart was a total meathead and so I was like "Needs moar gay" and he got all pissed. And then me and my friend Eamonn (who was just there apparently?) and the one gay ballet dancer from Center Stage are all like "You know, I think we got the pretty sweet end of the deal as far as a waterpark prom goes" and then everyone had to go into the hotel where we were having an actual dance, which was apparently owned by Disney. And for some reason, I felt the need to take my swimsuit off, so I'm just, like, wandering around a Disney lobbey soaking wet and practically naked and I get all distracted by these cool virtual walkways... and then I woke up.

...k'. I'm sure Katelyn and what's-her-name are ok. Boyd Langton was on the case.

So, to recap, things I've been watching/thinking about too much lately:
Harry Potter
BBC's Robin Hood / The Tudors (the last of the Plantagenets were just executed on the show)
Wanting a Disney vacation
Dollhouse
Scenes with Roger and the distinct theme of attempted rape

So. At least I'm well rounded.

I was bored this morning so I decided to do a Swacit mix with nothing but Decemberists songs. Good times.

And I am a writer, writer of fictions, I am the heart that you call home )

Katey-lynnnnnnn, I found season 3 of Robin Hood on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd8nzzfy61U

You must watch it, because I want to talk about it with you so badly I could explode.

When's everyone coming home btw?

Also, out of curiosity, are we doing the Potter midnight show this year? I definitely want to see it together (it's the only way to enjoy the butchering), but the midnight showing will be Tuesday night/Wednesday morning (why they pushed the release up from a weekend, I don't know. Clue: the fans have grown up and many have to work. Braintrusts.) and might be hassle for anyone with a job.

Also: (not at all obvious indication of how to pronounce names in chapter 2:)
Alan made a tiny gesture at Gael and Geoff set his crayon back down to the paper. "G-u-y," he wrote. He faltered for a moment and then, thinking himself very clever, finished, "-e-l."

Gael frowned and pulled the paper towards him, printing his name correctly at the bottom in careful capital letters that Geoff and Alan studied dubiously.

Alan looked to Gael for confirmation, who only rolled his light brown eyes and devoted himself utterly to his tiny carton of juice.

1. My orientation for Washtenaw is on Thursday. Lol, fun.

2. Writing's been going pretty well. I'm thinking of redoing the Swiki though since so many of the dates/info are wrong now. Fun fact I discovered: over the course of the twelve years it took for all the kids to be born, Jenny was pregnant for 54 months. At 32 (when Garen was born), that would constitute about 14% of her life spent pregnant. No one has the right to whine to her about fucking anything ever again.

"Blegh, mum, I'm uncomfortable!" "O rly?"

Also, since Jenny and Rob's birthdates were changed, it would mean Jen didn't get pregnant until her thrid year at the University of Surrey (where the Business Programme is only three years long). This pleases me very much because it always bothered me that she didn't have a degree. Well, she does now. So sayeth I.

3. Dark Knight comes out Tuesday. I.am.so.fucking.stoked.

4. My aunt is about to try to get my cousin into Harry Potter. LOL. She got him Beedle the Bard for Christmas, figuring that since it's so little, it'd be a good place to start. I let them borrow my copy of the first movie since if you don't know who Dumbledore is, reading Beedle is less fun. That way he doesn't have to struggle through the first book before Christmas. He's very immature for seven and I worry he's still a bit too impatient and a bit too "durrr" to get through it.

I would've brought him the second movie too, but he is seriously the hugest wuss ever and between the Basilisk and Aragog he would have nightmares for a month.

Lol, I always sound so charitable towards my cousins, but if you've met them, you totally know what I'm talking about. Last night was grandpa's birthday and all they did was squawk. They are most annoying children I've ever known.

It's a pity Aunt Lori doesn't let us babysit them anymore since what I'd like to do is show Connor Brad Neely's Wizard People. Lol, "This is all you'll ever need to know about Harry Potter." Heh, which is exactly the sort of reason why we're not allowed to babysit anymore.

5. Speaking of HP, my Super Deluxe Edition of Beedle the Bard came on the 4th and it's freaking awesome. I chewed through it in all of 30 minutes and was pretty sad when I was finished. I've been reading these damn books since I was about 9 and it was, like, "Really? There's actually nothing more after this?"

I'm not gonna lie, I want this shit pretty bad:

The Tales of Beedle The Bard: Collector's Edition

Why do I have to be such a whore for pretty books? Plus the geek appeal.

Oh, the geek appeal.

I also kind of want the UK standard edition since it's cover is so much more badass than ours:

First time I've thought the UK cover was better for a Rowling book.

I'm thinking about asking mom and dad if I can buy both on ebay and have them for Christmas (since Chase got a BluRay player, there is an imbalance is Christmas prezzie distribution).

The UK edition is $30 w/shipping and the CE is $130 w/shipping (mum doesn't want her credit card on Amazon. Ok, so, we'll just pay more then). The organization on ebay I'd buy them from is an actual books seller, meaning part of the proceeds still go to charity.

SEE? I AM BEING FRIVOLOUS FOR THE CHILDREN!

lol, $160. What the hell is wrong with me? One of you talk me out of it.

EDIT: ok, I totally caved and bought the special edition. I can live with the buttugly American cover if I can have the super badass leather version as well. So I didn't buy the UK edition. I got Cannibal The Musical: 13th Anniversary Special Edition instead.

New HP Teaser

The WB has released yet another HP trailer, which can be seen HERE

Once again, it says "This Year".

Wtf?

Am I the only who thinks The WB is going to pull something... like... release Half Blood Prince this Christmas as a ~* super speshul surprise*~ ? And then they can pretend that they're releasing it because they really do love the fans ~*so much*~.

Seriously, I just don't understand why they keep releasing High Def stills and full-length trailers if it's not coming out until next summer.

Unless they're just deliberately being assholes (not out of the question).

(But serious lulz @ the new Potter trailer totally raping the crappy new Twatlight trailer.)

Oh man, I really miss having something Pottery to look forward to :(

Strangest Potter parody ever, yet full of lulz

Goblet of Fire

Lol, he has Felton's speech patterns down pretty well.

Draco: Hey, Potter! Yes! My father and I agree on one thing! And that's one thing only! There are five classifications of a Wizard. And me? You make up the seventh. ...The one that fucks men.

I like that it makes no sense whatsoever.

But my favorite is:
Ron: You cry every fuckin' movie.
Hermione: I don't cry every movie! If I cried every movie there'd be like.... tear drops from my eyes!
Ron: Bitch, whatever. I'm just trying to tell ya' that when a girl cries excessively it makes her an emo. I mean, Harry's always trying to call you an emo. Right, Harry?
Hermione: (wheeling on him) HARRY, ARE YOU TRYING TO CALL ME AN EMO?!
Harry: (startled) Bitch, I'm trying to go to the bathr-
Hermione: ARE YOU?!
Harry: ..........fuckin' shit.

Order of The Phoenix

Not as amusing as the last one, I think, but there are several moments that bring the lulz:

Harry (to Hermione): What the fuck are you talkin' about? Every time you open your mouth, I hear some accent... ..........I don't believe you can act... serious.

Dumbledore: HARRY, I NEED YOUR HELP!
Harry: ...........I'm alright.
Dumbledore: GOD DAMN IT, HARRY!

You know, just when my anger at WB began to subside over pushing the HBP release date back 8 months.... they have to go and make it worse.

'Horn acknowledged that the studio would have to pacify fans in the months to come: “We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans.”'
O rly? And how do you plan on pacifying us?

Alan Horn- “I’ve seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November.”
Ah. Well, now. I certainly feel pacified.

Their pacification has included releasing a couple more stills from the movie... I mean, I guess they think that's pacifying (all it's really doing is rekindling everyone's disappointment and rancor). But, seriously, this pic of Narcissa Malfoy was enough to make me not care that the movie isn't coming out for another year.
Unbreakable Vow
Her hair alone is enough for me to not want to see HBP period. I must have forgotten in all this hubbub just how badly the movies often suck.

Really, the hair has healed me. I'm not angry anymore.

Oh...wait...
The anger is back.

.....................There are no words for the expression on my face right now. If the words "Oh, God damn you all" could be personified as a single facial expression.... that's the face I'm making.

The Half Blood Trailer just went up on AOL. It came out 90 minutes earlier on MSN though (lol, pwned Aol).

MSN version

AOL version

The AOL has three different HD versions.

It's very cool, but it's really just a long teaser. Seriously, why the hell have they been taking so long with trailers for this? It's not until November, but really we should have had a proper trailer by now.

That said... Dumbledore'sscarfLOLWTF?where'shisfabplumvelvetsuit?! Also, it looks like they decided to include Fenrir Greyback, which, yay, since he's one of the only villains in the series who is seriously creepy. Lol, the other Death Eaters are good villains/sadistic, but they're also very lulzworthy (Like Bellatrix and Lucius practically getting into a slapfight in Book 7). Fenrir's just gross.

Cutest QC strip in ages
Aww, Faye's face in the last panel.

I didn't dislodge the clot, as it turns out. My gums are healing really well. But I did have a really bad fever last night and, as a result I think, had some seriously weird dreams.

Dream #1- I was idly rubbing at my feet and big schluffs of skin came off. Like dry husks of skin. I was literally molting. Like a snake. What the fuck was that about?

Dream #2- LolMaraudersdreamLOL! Something about a park and ice cream. Lulz were had. There was this ice cream stand with different flavors, all of which represented an HP character (though the Marauders didn't get that, of course). There was Luna ice cream, which was very tasty. Hee, Lily sat down next to Snapeadoodle with Severus flavored ice cream (which looked a lot like mint chocolate chip) and he was being the big, smelly weirdo he always is and then somebody gave Lily "Silver Stag" which was a really delicious cookies'n'cream and Snape got all jealous. Of ice cream. It was amusing. I was very disappointed that the dream ended before I got to see the Remus or Sirius flavors. I would've liked to have some. Speaking of which...

Dream #3- I don't often have intense sex dreams. I really don't have that many sex dreams at all. My pent up virgin frustrations usually find other ways to make themselves known. But, er, I certainly had one. A very good, somewhat rough one. That's not what weirded me out. What weirded me out was who I was having sex with. Let me just say this... it was with one of my characters (which makes the whole thing sort of sad)..... but not one I'd ever want to have sex with in real life. Good looking, but, just, NO. I think a couple of you can figure out who I mean through process of elimination (considering how many of my characters I would shag). Blah. What the hell? I'm totally going to blame my fever. I was clearly delirious. Also, I should probably stop listening to the Savage Love podcast as I fall asleep.

...er.... anyway, happy Fourth of July.

Did another character portrait this morning. I did Rebecca. I don't think this one is as good as the Adge one, but I have a fever and memories of spooky sex dreams floating around in my head.

Ostriches, bitches! )

I've never been so grateful for Ms Johnson. Today when I woke up, I had a letter. Inside was a hardcopy rec from Ms. Preiskorn along with a very nice note from Johnson. She thinks I didn't get in to U of M simply because my app went in too late. She said kids who applied in November started getting waitlisted. A large portion of this year's senior class are apparently going to State.

This takes so much off my mind. Because of the stupid lightning storms, I didn't get to see Prieskorn and wish her farethewell. Her rec is so ridiculously nice, btw. I almost got teary because she's way too cool to retire.

Katelyn, if I need more than one copy of the rec, is it ok to just photocopy it? The one I have has Prieskorn's signature on it and is on official BAS stationary, so copies wouldn't look like I just written them myself on Microsoft Word or something.

Random, but... you know where I want to go? Universal Studios in Orlando. I haven't been there in years, I realise. Over 3 years at the least. I want to go really bad and ride the Duelling Dragons until I'm ill. :/

Maybe I'll wait until next year when the Harry Potter Island is open. Because I really am that huge a dork. Hopefully it'll be 20 acres worth of awesome. They should really put a huge, fuckoff, rollercoaster. Yes, another one. I mean... what with Quidditch and everything, they should have one, yeah? They probably won't. They've been so mum about rides/exhibits there. Hee, it'd be awesome if the rides were all sort of lame. "Mr. VOLDY'S WILD RIDE!"

Rowling Trial LULZ

Even in that quick read, he said, he found Rowling's "magical world" hard to follow, filled with strange names and words that would be gibberish in any other context.

"I found it extremely complex," he said, suggesting there is genuine worth in a book like Vander Ark's, even if does nothing more than index the somewhat ridiculous-sounding names of Rowling's characters.

LOLOLOLOL WHUT? Really? Are you kidding me? "Extremely complex"? Odd, I didn't have any problem following it when I was nine. Also, an index of the characters? Great. We have one online. It can stay there.

This trial is turning out to be such a joke. Props to JK for testifying with such grade A snark.

David Hammer said that there was text for every character, and she said, “Yes, is that the best you can say for the Lexicon, ‘It has text’?” Mr. Hammer responded that a lot of work had gone into it, and she said, “Yes, it was a lot of work. I remember doing it.”
Hee! Also, strange place for her to confirm the whole "lycanthropy is a metaphor for HIV" thing. Though I'm happy she did it.

Honestly, it's pissing me off that RDR and Vander Ark think it's all right to publish a "literary guide" with no analysis/original commentary and that a lot of people are agreeing with them. I enjoyed the lexicon as a website, but what I enjoyed were the essays and fanart (including that of the fabulous [info]buttfacemakani. But neither is going to be published in the lexicon. So, really, what on earth would we need an alphabetical list of characters and their verbatim descriptions for?

Also, it bugs me because Vander Ark is making the rest of HP fandom look like a bunch of obsessed, weeping manchildren.
